According to the NHS children between the ages of 5-18 should be participating in at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day. Despite this, the children of today’s generation are the least active. Just one in four boys and one in five girls in England participate in the recommended 60 minutes of activity each day. Figures from Ofcom have also shown that children aged 5-15 spend nearly two hours online a day during the week and this increases to three hours a day on the weekend.

What are the barriers? Research has shown that children feel that there is little to do locally, with play parks neglected or are aimed at a different age group. Some children were put off as they didn’t feel safe in the public area. To address this The Trainers wants to make physical activity a priority for all children and young people, with practical solutions to make physical activity more accessible and appealing.

Physical activity is not only great fun, but it also benefits their health and wellbeing. Our wellness programmes are designed to allow children to try new activities, test themselves and to learn new skills. Group exercise is also a great way of developing social and emotional skills.

There is so much to be gained by encouraging children and young adults to be more active. Our end goal isn’t just about tackling the growing problem of childhood obesity, it is about creating healthy, happy childhoods that will enable children to thrive. It is time for a joined-up approach to supporting the health and wellbeing of children and to work together to protect the health of future generations.

FAQ About School’s Fitness Classes

– How many children can take part in a session?
Our group sessions vary from 3 to up to 20 people. We like to keep a maximum ratio of 1:20 in order for us to monitor each individual throughout the session.
– What types of exercise will be included in the classes?
We want all children and staff to feel motivated and enjoy the activities. We will include a warm up and cool down as part of each activity. There will also be water breaks throughout the session. We will start at a level that matches the class’ fitness level. Each class will be different, it’ll be made up of a mixture of cariovasular training, resistance training (body weight) and flexibility.
– Does the Instructor have a DBS?
Yes all of our trainers are DBS checked. They are also first aid qualified and hold public liability insurance.
– Do you do staff fitness sessions also?
Yes, we usually start with the children straight after school, and then another class to follow for the staff. However, we are flexible and can work around your schools needs.
